Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Approximately 80% of strokes are ischemic, occurring when blood flow to the brain is blocked by an embolus or by intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) that narrows or occludes cerebral arteries.
Our research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying ICAD development and identifying strategies to prevent plaque progression, rupture, and vessel occlusion. In parallel, we evaluate the safety, feasibility, and clinical performance of emerging therapeutic devices and technologies developed to treat acute ischemic stroke and prevent recurrent cerebrovascular events.
